Compare two carton sizes for a 3 kg parcel
See how carton dimensions affect estimated chargeable weight before you compare shipping prices.

Use one consistent service rule
Assume centimeters, kilograms, a divisor of 5000 and rounding upward to the next 0.5 kg. These are example settings; confirm the actual service and contract. Measure the sealed parcel at its outermost points. This calculator uses the dimensions as entered and does not apply a carrier’s separate dimension-rounding rules.
Larger carton: 40 × 30 × 20 cm
Volume is 24,000 cm³. Dimensional weight is 24,000 ÷ 5000 = 4.8 kg. With an actual packed weight of 3 kg, the higher figure is 4.8 kg. Rounding that upward to a 0.5 kg step produces an estimated chargeable weight of 5 kg.
Smaller carton: 35 × 25 × 20 cm
Volume is 17,500 cm³, giving 3.5 kg of dimensional weight. If the safely packed parcel still weighs 3 kg, the estimated chargeable weight is 3.5 kg, already on the selected rounding step. That is 1.5 kg lower than the larger carton, a 30% reduction in estimated chargeable weight. It is not a guaranteed 30% reduction in price.
Reweigh after changing packaging
A smaller box is useful only when it protects the contents. Preserve cushioning, corner clearance and any required handling or hazardous-goods packaging. Reweigh the sealed alternative. If its actual weight becomes 4 kg, actual weight governs and the estimate becomes 4 kg instead of 3.5 kg.
Request two comparable quotes
Compare the same route, service speed, shipment date and declared value. Minimum charges, fuel, remote-area fees, size limits and oversize surcharges may change the price. DHL’s published example uses a 5000 divisor for the stated metric service; other carriers or contracts can use a different divisor or rounding method.
