An L-shaped room and three waste allowances
Split the floor without overlap, then see exactly when another pack becomes necessary.

Draw rectangles that do not overlap
Imagine an L-shaped floor formed by a 4 × 3 m main area and a 2 × 1.5 m alcove outside it. The rectangles meet at an edge and do not overlap. Add 12 + 3 = 15 m². If the alcove is already inside your main measurement, adding it again would overstate the area. Mark the shared edge on a sketch before entering two rooms.
Compare 5%, 10% and 15%
At 2 m² per pack and 35 USD per pack: a 5% allowance gives a 15.75 m² target, requiring 8 packs and 280 USD. At 10%, the target is 16.50 m², requiring 9 packs and 315 USD. At 15%, the target is 17.25 m², still requiring 9 packs and 315 USD.
Eight packs cover 16 m². For a 15 m² floor, the allowance boundary is (16 ÷ 15 − 1) × 100, about 6.67%. Above the exact boundary, the order moves to nine packs. The screen rounds decimal displays, so do not use a rounded percentage as an exact purchasing cutoff.
Choose the allowance from the installation
The presets are comparison controls. Diagonal layouts, patterned tiles, long narrow cuts, damaged pieces and future repairs can require different allowances. Quick-Step gives 5% for a regular room and 10% for a complex room as examples for its laminate guidance; that is not a rule for every product. Ask your supplier or installer which allowance fits the actual layout.
Check what a rectangle cannot describe
This area calculation does not produce a cutting plan. It does not reserve expansion gaps, lay out grout joints, design stairs or evaluate the subfloor. Measure fixed obstructions consistently and confirm whether to include areas under cabinetry. Keep the sketch and pack label with the estimate so someone else can reproduce your inputs.
